PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a variable valve timing mechanism and an engine capable of inhibiting noise generated due to fluctuation of tension when a power transmission part and an idler sprocket mesh. SOLUTION: This control device 100 for the variable valve timing mechanisms 40a, 40b, executes valve timing change control changing at least one of valve timing of a first bank 10a and valve timing of a second bank 10b, so as to keep fluctuation of tension of the power transmission part 34 between a first cam sprocket 24a and the idler sprocket 30 in reverse phase of fluctuation of tension of the power transmission part between a second cam sprocket 24b and the idler sprocket.
