PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove a jam while carrying out fixing, by releasing the pressure of firm contact between a heating rotor and a pressure rotor in steps. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus includes: a control section 10; a jam detector that detects a jam of paper P; and a fixing device 6 that applies heat and pressure to paper P with a toner image transferred thereto. In the image forming apparatus, the fixing device 6 includes: the heating rotor for applying heat; the pressure rotor for applying pressure to the heating rotor while being in firm contact with it; a paper thickness detector for detecting the thickness of paper P passed through a nip; a pressing mechanism 8 for pressing the pressure rotor against the heating rotor, thereby bringing the pressure rotor into firm contact with the heating rotor; and a pressure adjusting mechanism 9 capable adjusting the pressure of the firm contact in three steps, which are regular paper pressure, special paper pressure lower than the regular paper pressure, and pressure for removing a special paper jam lower than the special paper pressure. A control section 10 controls the pressure adjusting mechanism 9 such that if a regular paper jam is caused, the special paper pressure is applied, and if a special paper jam is caused, pressure for removing a special paper jam is applied.
