[Class 4] An aeroplane having stabilizer surfaces mounted in apertures in the wings near the tips and tiltable about inclined axes as described in Specification 468,559, is provided with trailing edge flaps arranged in recesses in the wings aft of the stabilizers. The flaps may act as ailerons or elevators, or as flaps to control the travel of the centre of pressure as the stabilizers are tilted, and may be arranged to pivot only upwards, or both upwards and downwards, or differentially, that is the upward movement of either flap may be greater than the downward movement of the other or the upward or downward movement of either flap may be greater than the like movement of the other. The stabilizer or the wing or both may be slotted as set out in Specification 560,573. There may be more than one stabilizer arranged in each wing end part and a trailing edge flap associated with each stabilizer, or a single flap may be used to the rear of the associated stabilizers. Figs. 1 and 2 show a stabilizer 1 pivoted about an axis CC and normally fitting snugly within a recess near the end of a swept-back wing and shaped as shown. As the stabilizer is tilted, slots are opened to the front and rear of the aperture and airflow is directed over a flap 12 at the trailing edge of the wing at all angles of attack. At small angles of displacement, the stabilizer increases the lift of the wing and the flap 12 is then tilted upwardly to counteract the rearward movement of the centre of pressure. At larger angles of displacement, from 10‹ to 90‹, the lift is reduced and the stabilizers form the principal means of control. The flap 12 may be pivoted at D so as to leave a gap 14 in the lower surface of the wing when in normal position. The gap limits the amount of downward tilting of the flap but the upward movement is unrestricted. The flaps may alternatively be of the split type, or a flap having a semi-cylindrical leading edge fitting a corresponding recess in the plane may be used. The flap and stabilizer may be interconnected to move simultaneously. These control means may be fitted to model aeroplanes and gliders in which case they would be pre-set or controlled by tuned mechanical means or by radio.
