The method involves connecting a converter unit (2) to a three-phase electrical alternating current (AC) mains system. Actuatable power semiconductor switches are actuated by utilizing an actuation signal (Sa). A control signal (Sr) is formed by adjusting a harmonic component of system currents to a system current set point value. The system current set point value is formed by adjusting an absolute value of the harmonic component of system voltages to the absolute value of a prescribable system voltage set point value (Unhref). An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for operating a converter circuit.
