An automatic transmission (1) has a clutch (C-1), a clutch (C-3), and a clutch (C-4) that are arranged axially closer to the planetary gear (DP) than a planetary gear unit (PU). Friction plates (21) of the clutch (C-1) and friction plates (31) of the clutch (C-3) are arranged on the radially outer side of the planetary gear (DP). Friction plates (41) of the clutch (C-4) are arranged on the radially inner side of the friction plates (31) of the clutch (C-3) such that at least some of the friction plates (41) overlap on the friction plates (31). As a result, the axial length of the automatic transmission (1) is reduced by the amount of the axial overlap between the friction plates (31) of the clutch (C-3) and the friction plates (41) of the clutch (41). ® KIPO & WIPO 2009
