A method and an apparatus for detecting a channel are provided to effectively perform exchange of repetitive soft information of a joint bit detector, a RLL decoder, and an external soft-input soft-output decoder. A trellis-based detector(u) performs a joint detection of a binary data and a channel decoding. The trellis-based detector uses trellis of states of reduced number with chase of a survival route according to a delayed decision feedback access method. The trellis explains RLL encoding, NRZI pre-coding, influence of a channel, and PR equalization. The trellis includes a noise predictor. When a correlated noise exists, the trellis improves performance in case soft information is exchanged with an ECC decoder or an external soft-input soft-output channel.
