A method for selecting a reference picture is provided to offer reference picture information used in motion compensation by differently determining reference picture indexes according to the coding mode of a macroblock. Reference picture indexes are determined in a frame picture having frame/field macroblocks. Firstly, reference picture indexes in the frame unit are calculated while considering the reference pictures in the frame units on a picture or slice level. Then, a reference picture index on a macroblock level is determined. Herein, the reference picture index is modified according to the coding mode of the macroblock while performing a coding operation on the reference picture indexes of the frame unit, which are obtained on the picture or slice level, by the macroblock pair unit. If the macroblock is a frame macroblock, the reference picture indexes of the frame unit, which are obtained on the picture or slice level, are used. If the macroblock is a field macroblock, each of reference frames is divided into two fields while sequentially visiting the reference frames according to the reference picture indexes of the frame unit, which are obtained on the picture or slice level. Then, the reference picture indexes are newly allocated to each of the fields. |
