The device has a determining module (15) determining evolution of temperature of cooling liquid i.e. water, after stopping of an internal combustion engine (2), and an evaluating module (16) evaluating a time elapsed form the starting of the engine. An estimating module (17) estimates temperature of a component i.e. exhaust line (6), housed in a compartment (1) of the engine from a temperature value of the component during stopping of the engine and a temperature variable reaching the cooling liquid temperature when the time is elapsed from the stopping of the engine towards the infinity. An independent claim is also included for a method for estimating temperature of a component housed in a compartment of a combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
