PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent impairment of image quality even when a moving object of high brightness is imaged, and to prevent drop in precision of control operation using an image signal. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus comprises a means for acquiring original image data including an object, a means for detecting a smear region where smear is generated from the original image data and then detecting the amount of smear of picture elements included in the smear region, and a smear correction means for generating first and second image data by correcting the levels of picture elements included in the smear region of the original image data with first and second amounts of correction obtained by multiplying the amount of smear by first and second coefficients, wherein the first image data is used for at least either of image display and image recording, the second image data is used for at least one of exposure control, focusing and white balance control.
