PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ranging device capable of assembling systems of a small lot and at low cost, with less errors of measurement due to the background light. SOLUTION: A detection light output from a light-emitting device 11 is projected toward an object A1 to be measured, and a returning light of the detection light is converged with a lens 13, to form a convergence spot SP at a detection plane 14a of a linear sensor 14. A computing element 15 identifies the peak in the amount of received light for the convergence spot SP by using numerical value data; output as serial data from the linear sensor 14, of the amount of the light received for each of 102 light-receiving elements 18; and calculates the distance to the object A1 to output a calculated result as 4-bit parallel data through output terminals OUT1-OUT4.
