PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide tablets for rapidly and safely preparing highly converted solutions of chlorine dioxide. SOLUTION: The tablet is a form of a porous solid containing a mixture of granule particle ingredient comprising a metal chlorite and a solid acid source, formed by compression, when added to water, producing more chlorine dioxide than when the equivalent weights of the ingredients in powder form are added to water, and giving a solution having the ratio of the concentration of chlorine dioxide to the sum of the concentrations of chlorine dioxide and chlorite anion, and greater than 0.25 by weight.
