Disclosed is a material for a bone fixation device which can sufficiently protect a bone and inhibit bone resorption, and a bone fixation device. A material for a bone fixation device comprising a porous metal member and a ceramic member which is filled within the porous metal member and soluble in a biological environment. Because of comprising the ceramic material being filled within the porous metal member, this material for a bone fixation device has a relatively high Young's modulus immediately after implantation into living body. Thus, the material can sufficiently protect a weak bone immediately after the implantation. Since the ceramic member melts or disintegrates with the elapse of time after the implantation, the Young's modulus of the material for a bone fixation device decreases. Thus, the mechanical stimulation on the bone is gradually elevated as the bone is repaired. As a result, bone resorption can be inhibited. |
