PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method that allows successful plate making by using an inexpensive serial thermal head (TPH). SOLUTION: Four heating elements 2 aligned in the auxiliary scanning direction of the TPH 1 are grouped into two sets of two each. The TPH and a plate 3 are moved relative to each other in the auxiliary scanning direction. Using each pair of heating elements of the TPH, two main scans are conducted on the same plate-making area of the plate to complete a plate-making image. In this case, for the same plate-making area, when a hole is created by the (n)-th main scan between positions where holes are created by the (n)-1-th main scan, the greater the number of already formed holes which the hole to be created (n)-th time is adjacent to, the more energy is imparted to the heating elements.
