Disclosed is an apparatus that is used for detecting liquids or substances from liquids and comprises a plunger (2) that has a porous plunger layer (9) which is pressed onto a sensor array (1). Each sensor (3) of the sensor array (1) is surrounded by elevations (5) which spatially separate the sensors (3) from each other like walls. When the plunger layer (9) is pressed onto the sensor array (1), the walls (5) are pressed into the pores (11) of the plunger layer (9). Liquid-tight connections are created between the walls (5) and the plunger layer (9) while liquid remains over the sensors (3). Said liquid can be measured. When there is direct mechanical contact between the plunger layer (9) and the sensors (3), the liquid over the sensors (3) is located in open pores (11) on the surface of the plunger layer (9). No liquid flows between the pores (11) and across the walls (5) when pressure is applied to the plunger layer (9) such that closed reaction chambers are created.
