PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion device and an operation method of the combustion device capable of improving combustion efficiency. SOLUTION: The combustion device 100 includes rotary kiln main bodies 1, 2 and arranged in series in a plurality of stages, and conveys and burns waste material introduced in the former stage kiln body 1 through the respective kiln bodies 1, 2. An intermediate chamber 8 is positioned between the kiln main bodies 1, 2 and connects them with each other, and the waste material is charged in it. The waste material charged in the intermediate chamber 8 is, for example, material which functions as reduction material and heating material (a heat source), or material which has a shorter residence time or which is not necessary to dry, that is the waste material, which is enough to be charged in the later stage side kiln body 2 and is not necessary to be charged in the former stage side kiln body 1.
