PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of enhancing the efficiency of control for stably operating a forward bias application means. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image carrier 27 which supports a developer image; a transfer means 30 which transfers the developer image onto a recording medium; a forward bias application means 62 which applies a forward bias voltage to the transfer means; a reverse bias application means 63 which applies a reverse bias voltage with a polarity reverse to that of the normal bias voltage to the transfer means; a detection means 84 which detects inflow current Ii which flows from the image carrier 27 to the normal bias application means 62 through the transfer means 30; and a determination means 61 which determines, when the detection value of the inflow current Ii exceeds a first predetermined value, a lower limit value of the reverse bias based on the detection value of the inflow current. The reverse bias application means 63 applies the reverse bias of the lower limit value to the transfer means 30 at least before application of the forward bias to the transfer means 30.
