PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain the deterioration in a combustion state by the performance of cylinder resting operation, by improving fuel economy by performing the cylinder resting operation in the widest engine operation area, regardless of whether a variable valve train is an operation permitting state or an operation prohibiting state. SOLUTION: An engine operation area for performing the cylinder resting operation in cylinder resting control is switched between a cylinder resting area AP1 and a cylinder resting area AP2, in response to the fact of whether valve timing control of an intake valve 9 is performed in the operation permitting state of the variable valve train 13 or the valve timing control is stopped in the operation prohibiting state of the mechanism 13. Therefore, the engine operation area for performing the cylinder resting operation can be set in an area suitable to respective states in response to the fact of whether the variable valve train 13 is the operation permitting state or the operation prohibiting state.
