The present invention is related to a circuit for overvoltage protection of a rechargeable energy storage device (1), said circuit comprising : a voltage divider (R1, R2) coupled in parallel to said storage device, a switch (7) coupled in parallel to said storage device, and arranged to close when the voltage at an intermediate point (10) of said voltage divider reaches a pre-determined reference level, characterized in that said switch (7) is a transistor coupled in reverse polarity with respect to the storage device (1).
