The inverter (10) has an air cooler (16) for cooling the inverter and an air filter (20) for filtering cooling air. A vibration actuator (22) is provided for shifting the air filter into mechanical vibrations. A controller (32) switches on and off the vibration actuator in pre-determined time intervals, where switching on and off of the vibration actuator is based on an output signal of a sensor (34). A collecting container (24) is provided under the air filter for retaining particles falling down from the air filter. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a frequency inverter.
