The device (100) has a safety controller (130) connected with an external interface (110) i.e. universal serial bus (USB)interface, and another external interface (120) to validate an access authorization based on a code word (112) received over the interface (110). The controller enables a coded memory access to an external memory (190) over the interface (120), and prevents the coded memory access over the interface (110) or prevents an output of data over the interface (110) based on data received over the interface (120), during a negative validation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a procedure for protecting data stored in an external memory (2) a safe memory system comprising a memory chip.
