PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a fiber optic link which operates at high data rate inexpensively.

SOLUTION: If a laser meets certain requirements for noise, a data rate of a transceiver can be greater than the data rate of the laser. In particular, a relative intensity noise (RIN) of the laser must be low enough to ensure a low bit error rate (BER) of the link. Relatively inexpensive low bandwidth optical and electrical components that meet such condition are incorporated and an electrical equalization is performed.
