PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object kind determination device and method capable of determining the kind of an object photographed in an image by a simple processing regardless of the distance or posture of the object, and to provide a program for object kind determination. SOLUTION: The object kind determination device includes: a distance detection means 11 for specifying an image area corresponding to the object from an image photographed by an imaging means 2; a distance detection means 12 for detecting a distance between the object and the imaging means 2; a shape determination means 13 for performing reduction processing of reducing the number of pixels included in the image area by a degree corresponding to the distance detected by the distance detection means 12 of the object corresponding to the image area to the specified image area and determining whether or not there is the reference shape of a prescribed reference size in the image after the processing; and a kind determination means 14 for determining the kind of the object on the basis of the determination result by the shape determination means 13.
