PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector capable of improving visibility of a display for lighting time, and a method of controlling the same. SOLUTION: The projector includes a lamp 11, a blast 40 which lights or extinguishes the lamp; an image signal processing part 32 which generates an image signal for display image; an optical modulation part which modulates a luminous flux emitted from the lamp 11; a projection optical system 13 which magnifies and projects the modulated luminous flux; a storage part 44; an operation signal input part 43 for inputting an operation signal according to an operation content; and a control part 20 which measures an accumulated value of the lighting time of the lamp 11 and store accumulated value information of the lighting time in the storage part 44. The control part 20 acquires, upon receipt of a predetermined operation signal from the input part 43, the accumulated value information of the lighting time stored in the storage part 44, and causes the image signal processing part 32 to generate an image signal for identification display screen according to the acquired accumulated value information of the lighting time.
