PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector of composition for fully cooling the inside, even if introducing the air in the vicinity of a ceiling, as it is, and to provide a method of controlling the projector. SOLUTION: The projector 1 includes: a mechanism part for projecting image light modulating and forming a light flux emitted from a light source part, in response to image signals by being provided in the inside of the projector 1; an open air current fan 30 for stirring the air in the vicinity of the projector 1 and having a structure being accommodated in a cover exterior 2 and drawn out from the cover exterior 2; and a control part for performing control commanding operation of the open air current fan 30, when the open air current fan 30 is drawn out from the cover exterior 2, by installing to suspend the projector 1 and allowing the light source part to light.
