An additive is added to the coking vessel of a coking process to cause a modification of a quantity, a yield characteristic, a property, or a quality of the products resulting from this coking process. The additive contains catalyst(s), seeding agent(s), excess reactant(s), quenching agent(s), carrier(s), or any combination thereof to modify reaction kinetics to preferentially convert various hydrocarbon compounds of the coking process to higher quality products of higher value.
