The transmission (10) has a torque transmitting mechanisms e.g. clutches (26-32), engaged in combinations of three to establish nine forward speed ratios and a reverse speed ratio between an input shaft (12) and an output shaft (22). An imaginary plane (P) is disposed perpendicular to an input shaft axis and between an end of the input shaft and planetary gear sets (14-20). The gear set (20) is adjacent the imaginary plane, and the gear set (14) is remote from the plane. The gear set (16) is adjacent the gear set (20), and the gear set (18) is disposed between the sets (14, 16).
