The retractor has a belt spool rotatably mounted in a frame, where the belt spool is blocked against rotation in a seat belt operating direction relative to the frame. The blocking mechanism comprises a coupling disk (18) that is rotatable relative to the belt spool. A bi-stable locking mechanism comprises a locking bar (42) tiltable between an initial position and a locking position. Rotation of the coupling disk is relative to rotation of the belt spool in the initial position. The locking bar engages with a coupling element e.g. tension spring, in the locking position.
