<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new potato-shaped graphite particles or particles essentially consisting of graphite, and to provide a method for preparing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The potato-shaped modified graphite particles have impurities in their internal structure and have, at the surface, a low, even nil, rate of an impurity or several impurities, and the level of the impurity is similar to the level of that present in natural graphite. Further, the particles essentially consisting of modified graphite are composed of particles in a prism form of graphite coated with the precipitates of metal and/or the precipitates of carbonic acid, are useful for moisture absorbers and/or oxygen scavengers, and are useful for the preparation of negative electrodes owing to their performance in a circulation process.
