The device (1) has a sensor (10) for obstacle recognition including a number of separately analyzable optical fibers (L) arranged in a circumferential direction of the device or arranged in horizontal extension and/or vertical extension of an object. A light cable of the optical fibers is measurably influenced by collision impact. The light cable is made of light conducting fiber, which is covered by elastic resilient material (12) e.g. elastic resilient foam material, at an adjoining site. An evanescent-field sensor and a fiber optic interferometer evaluate light intensity.
