PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tertiary shutdown system for a liquid metal reactor that eliminates the need for considering an ATWS in setting the thermal power limits of the reactor. SOLUTION: The shutdown system includes a tank of a neutron absorbing material sealed by a valve that supplies the absorbing material, in response to an operator's command, into a stagnant pool of sodium in a core confined to prevent the absorbing material from flowing into a coolant flowing through the core. Additionally, the valve is passively open to release the absorbing material into the stagnant pool of sodium when the temperature of the valve exceeds a predetermined limit.
