PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress transition of a liquid crystal display device which includes an OCB mode type liquid crystal layer LC from a bend alignment to spray alignment. SOLUTION: The OCB mode type liquid crystal layer LC having positive dielectric constant anisotropyΔεis sandwiched between a pixel electrode 17 disposed on a first transparent substrate 10 and a common electrode 21 disposed on a second transparent substrate 20. A voltage applying means 103 of applying a prescribed voltage V<SB>B</SB>to the common electrode 21 so as not to cause the liquid crystal layer LC, having changed temporarily from spray alignment to bend alignment, to change from the bend alignment to the spray alignment again is connected to the common electrode 21. The prescribed voltage V<SB>B</SB>is applied to the common electrode 21 after a display period and then even when a voltage (lower than a threshold voltage V<SB>C</SB>of transition) corresponding to a white display voltage V<SB>1</SB>is applied to the liquid crystal layer LC in the display period, the bend alignment of the liquid crystal layer LC is maintained to obtain high transmittance.
