PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a slab grinding device and method, which prevents the slab grinding device 3 from damaging conveying rollers 2 when a slab 1 is moved in a width direction. SOLUTION: The slab 1 conveyed by the conveying rollers 2 is lifted via two carriages 331 movable in the width direction of the slab 1 provided on two lifting mechanisms 30 by the two lifting mechanisms 30, provided between the conveying rollers 2 in a longitudinal direction of the slab 1, and vertically moving the slab 1. Based on information about a distance to a side end surface of the slab 1 sent from two sensors 5 arranged in the longitudinal direction of the slab 1 to a control device 10, the slab 1 is moved to a position X which is convenient for grinding the slab 1 by the two carriages 331 independently and then ground by a grinding machine 4.
