PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily miniaturize an absolute encoder assembled to an industrial robot, or the like, and to easily reduce its manufacturing costs. SOLUTION: The absolute encoder 1 includes: a rotary encoding plate 3 having an incremental pattern 8 and an absolute pattern 9; a first light receiving element array 23 for outputting an incremental pattern signal by detecting light from the incremental pattern 8; a second light receiving element array 24 for outputting an absolute pattern signal by detecting light from the absolute pattern 9; and a processing circuit 10 for differentially amplifying the difference between the absolute pattern signal and a reference signal. The processing circuit 10 generates a reference signal by utilizing the incremental pattern signal. The rotary encoding plate 3 requires only the incremental pattern 8 and the absolute pattern 9, while the detection unit 2 only requires the first and second light receiving element arrays 23, 24.
