Production of an optical fiber comprises elongating a coaxial arrangement consisting of a core rod and an outer casing made from a quartz glass cylinder having an outer diameter of at least 100 mm by: feeding into a heating zone; softening zones; and drawing optical fibers from the softening region from below. An Independent claim is also included for an optical fiber produced by the above process. Preferred Features: The quartz glass cylinder has an outer diameter of at least 150, preferably at least 200 mm and an inner diameter of not more than 70, preferably 50 mm. The quartz glass cylinder has a wall thickness deviation of not more than 0.3, preferably not more than 0.1 mm. |
