USE OF A COMBINATION OF IRON MONOXIDE AND SPINEL OXIDES AS A SENSITIVE MATERIAL FOR DETECTING INFRARED RADIATION

The use of special mixed oxides of iron and other metals as sensitive material in thin layers for the bolometric detection of infrared radiation. The use, as a sensitive material in thin layers for the bolometric detection of infrared (IR) radiation, of material with the composition (Fe 1-zM z) xO (I) (not including any dopants), in which the metals or the oxygen are in the form of ions. Fe : iron(II) or iron(III) cations; M : metal cations other than iron; z : the number of cations of type M; and x : less than 1 and more than 0.75. Independent claims are also included for (1) a bolometric device for IR detection or imaging, comprising a pick-up with a sensitive element in the form of a thin layer as above (2) a method for IR detection or imaging with the aid of a bolometric detector capable of absorbing incident radiation, converting it into heat and communicating some of the heat to a sensitive element as above showing temperature-dependent resistivity.
