An operation method and a device for an internal combustion engine are provided to secure the soft driving of the internal combustion engine by operating the simple and exact internal combustion engine. An operation method for an internal combustion engine comprises followings. A starting capacity adaptation value(ST AD) is adapted in a rotation profile during the internal combustion engine starting(ST) relative to the characteristic variable(S1). If the predetermined condition(COND) is satisfied in the quasi-stationary operating state(S10), an alpha adaptation value(LAM AD) is adapted according to the one or more control parameter(LAM RP) of an alpha controller(S12). A mid correction value(ZW KOR) is adapted according to the starting capacity adaptation value after the final adaptation next of the alpha adaptation value(S14). A measured fuel mass(MFF) is determined according to one or more operating parameter of the internal combustion engine. The measured fuel mass is amended for the starting of the internal combustion engine by the starting capacity adaptation value. The measured fuel mass is amended after the starting of the internal combustion engine according to the alpha adaptation value. The measured fuel mass is amended according to the mid correction value until the alpha adaptation value is adapted after each starting for the first time.
