In an internal combustion engine comprising a pressure lubricating oil . system including oil passages in the crankcase structure and an oil filter housing structure 15 removably secured to the crankcase 12, a drain chamber 31 in the filter housing 15 is arranged to receive oil drippings from the filters during their removal from the housing 15. Filter assemblies 27, comprising containers 28 and filter elements 29, are secured in the housing 15 by bolts 30, the containers 28 separating the drain chamber 31 from a pressure chamber 25. The drain chamber 31 communicates with a drain passage 45 from which oil is returned to the sump through a passage 46. The inner ends of the filter elements 29 are in communication with an outlet chamber 33 from which filtered oil passes through outlet passages 34, 35, 36 to main crank-shaft bearings. The chamber 15 has a removable access cover 50. The oil supplied to the filters may pass through oil coolers or it may pass through a by-pass valve to the pressure chamber 25. A filter by-pass valve is disposed between the chamber 25 and outlet passage 34. A pressure regulator is also provided.</p> |
