In a tubeless tyre, which may have circumferential sealing ribs 28 provided on the surfaces of its beads which engage the bead-retaining flanges 29 of the wheel rim 30, at least parts of the rim contact area of the beads are composed of a rubbery material having embedded therein a plurality of individual discrete fibres which extend unidirectionally substantially parallel to the line of contact in transverse section between the beads and the rim surfaces. The fibres tend to prevent flow of the rubber during moulding and ensure an adequate thickness of bead-covering rubber at the base of the grooves between the sealing ribs 28. As shown, the fibre reinforced material is built into the tyre in the form of a chafer strip extending from the axially inner surface of the bead 21, where it overlaps the air-impervious butyl rubber lining 24, to a point radially outwardly of the edge of the rim flange 29. The strip is cut from a calendered sheet so that the fibres, which have a length ranging from ¢ to 2 inches, aligned by the calendering extend parallel with the bead surfaces in transverse section. Suitable fibres include cotton wool, glass, cellulose acetate, polyacrylonitrile polyamide and polyester fibres, and suitable rubbery materials comprise natural rubber and synthetic rubbers such as butadieneacrylic nitrile and butadiene-styrene copolymers, and polychloroprene rubbers. The fibres may be added in the proportion of 10 to 100 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of rubbery base material which may be compounded with suitable fillers. |
