In a gear shift indicator that instructs a driver to shift gears in a transmission (2000), setting means for setting a time until the driver starts to be instructed to shift sets that start time shorter when the gear after a shift ends is a lower gear than the gear before the shift starts and it is determined that there is a need for the driver to shift into a lower gear, than when another determination is made.
