The system (6) has a cooling unit i.e. heat exchanger (9), cooling recirculated exhaust gas and arranged in upstream of an internal combustion engine (1) i.e. diesel engine, of a motor vehicle, while considering recirculation direction of gas in the system. An injector (11) i.e. jet, injects cleaning fluid i.e. water, in upstream of the heat exchanger. The injector is arranged between the heat exchanger and an exhaust gas recirculation valve (8). An independent claim is also included for a method for cleaning an exhaust gas recirculation system of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
