The device has an exhaust gas recirculation circuit (18) connected to a fresh air intake pipe (10). An exhaust gas treating unit (16) e.g. particle filter, is mounted on an exhaust line (15). A measuring unit is formed of pressure sensors (28, 32) and temperature sensor (30). The measuring unit measures the pressure and the temperature of fresh intake air, and the pressure of exhaust gas in upstream of the gas treating unit. An electronic control unit (21) estimates a fresh intake air flow rate from the measured temperature and pressure. An independent claim is also included for a method for estimating a fresh intake air flow rate in an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
