Ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic magnesium alloy production involves alloying up magnesium alloy or pure magnesium in melt with alloy components for magnetic intermetallic phases at a temperature at which the magnesium is completely melted. The obtained melt is mixed by contentious convection or stirring to form a casting. A rare-earth element or rare earth metal compound, cobalt or nickel from ferromagnetic transition metals or their mixture is used as components for the magnetic intermetallic phases. An independent claim is included for a ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic magnesium alloy, which includes 65 mass% of magnesium, 1.0-12 mass% of rare earth elements or rare earth metal compound, 1.0-15 mass% of cobalt or nickel, 0-20 mass% of minor component of alloy in form of unavoidable impurities, where the minor component of alloy includes 15 mass% of lithium and 0.1-1.0 mass% of iron, manganese, zircon, boron, calcium and beryllium.
