A surface light source and backlight unit having the same is provided to use the environment-friendly discharge gas. The surface light source device(100) comprises the first and second substrates(120,130), and electrodes. The first and second substrates comprise the discharge space. The discharge space has the discharge gas. The electrode is arranged in one among the first and second substrates. The discharge gas doesn't include Hg. The discharge gas contains the inert gas. The backlight unit comprises the surface light source device for supplying the environment-friendly discharge gas in the discharge space.
