REGULATION OF ALDOSTERONE SYNTHESIS FOR CONTROLLING HYPERTENSION

The subject application provides a regulatory region of the CYP11ß2 sequence, called pause sequence. The pause sequence is present within the signal sequence of this protein and deletion of the pause sequence increases the speed of entry of CYP11ß2 into mitochondria and causes a minimal increase of activity. However, the addition of at least one pause sequence after the signal increases aldosterone synthesis several fold. Also provided by the subject invention are methods of making aldosterone in vitro and methods of treating individuals suffering from aldosterone deficiencies.
