PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission which can reduce torque shared by individual automatic transmission sections, and be constructed compactly by reducing the number of torque transmission elements while suppressing unnecessary high rotation of a clutch. SOLUTION: In the automatic transmission 1 which changes the rotation of an input shaft 3 to a plurality of stages through a single planetary gear 5 and a compound planetary gear 6, a second clutch C2 which couples a second rotation element Cr of the compound planetary gear 6 to a speed increasing element Rf of the single planetary gear 5 is arranged between the single planetary gear 5 and the compound planetary gear 6, and a first clutch C1 which couples a fourth rotation element Sr2 of the compound planetary gear 6 to an input element Cf of the single planetary gear 5, and a third clutch C3 which couples a first rotation element Sr1 of the compound planetary gear 6 to an input element Cf of the single planetary gear 5 are arranged at an opposite side of the single planetary gear 5 with respect to the compound planetary gear 6 in an axial direction of the input shaft 3.
