PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new scattering type liquid crystal using a transverse electric field, which can be driven at a low voltage. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a pair of substrates 1, 1a joined to each other with a predetermined gap, a liquid crystal layer 10 held in the gap, and an electrode 17 formed on at least one substrate 1 and applying the transverse electric field parallel to the substrate 1 to the liquid crystal layer 10. The liquid crystal layer 10 exhibits a light-transmitting state in a state that no transverse electric field is applied, and the liquid crystal layer 10 exhibits a light scattering state in a state that the transverse electric field is applied. The liquid crystal layer 10 includes a liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy, and is aligned in a direction parallel to the transverse electric field in a state that no transverse electric field is applied.
