[PROBLEMS] An object of a backup method according to the embodiment is to certainly save data held by a volatile memory of a disc controller in a non-volatile memory and realize highly reliable backup. [MEANS FOR SOLVING PROBLEMS] In a backup method according to the embodiment, a controller which controls a disc array device and which has a volatile memory and a non-volatile memory saves data held by the volatile memory in the non-volatile memory. In the backup method, an error detection code is added to information on a plurality of defect management tables showing a defective region in the non-volatile memory, the plurality of defect management tables to which the error detection code is added is stored in the non-volatile memory, the presence and absence of an error in one selected defect management table out of the plurality of defect management tables is determined by use of the error detection core, and in the case where it is determined that the error is present, the data held by the volatile memory is saved in the non-volatile memory by use of the defect management table not selected.
