Disclosed is a material which enables the production of a flat panel display member that does not cause any cracking and has both high heat resistance and high transparency. Specifically disclosed is a material for forming a flat panel display member, which comprises: (A) silica particles; (B) at least one silane compound having a weight average molecular weight of 800 to 50,000 and selected from the group consisting of a hydrolysate of at least one organosilane represented by formula (1): R1 nSi(OR2)4-n [wherein R1 represents a univalent organic group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, provided that, when two or more R1's are present, the R1's may be the same as or different from each other; R2's independently represent an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms or an acyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; and n represents an integer of 0 to 3] and a condensation product of the organosilane; and (C) a thickening agent.
