PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device capable of monitoring a travel motion of a filament yarn with no or almost no fluff. SOLUTION: This travel motion monitoring device 10 includes a light source 14 for radiating a light L to a traveling yarn strip 12, a differential type spatial filter element 16 arranged in a direction opposite to the light source 14 relative to the yarn strip 12, and a signal processing circuit 18 for judging the traveling motion of the yarn strip 12 from an output of the differential type spatial filter element 16. In this invention, to monitor the traveling motion of the yarn strip 12, a pitch of light receiving elements 20a, 20b is made almost same as a magnitude of recessed and projecting parts of the yarn strip 12.
