PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium feed device capable of preventing creep deformation owing to continuation of a state where a feed follower roller is separated from a feed drive roller. SOLUTION: The medium feed device 30 is provided with a follower roller holder 33, for rotatably holding the feed follower roller 39, capable of moving the feed follower roller 39 to contact with or separate from the feed drive roller 38, an energizing means 36 for energizing the follower roller holder 33 in a direction that the feed follower roller 39 approaches the feed drive roller 38, separating direction displace means 31, 35 for displacing the follower roller holder 33 in a direction that the feed follower roller 39 separates from the feed drive roller 38 and a control part 40 for bringing the feed follower roller 39 being close to the feed drive roller 38 when it is judged that a separation continuation unnecessary condition (there is no need to continue a separation state) is satisfied.
